On 15th August, 1916, HM Submarines E4 and E41 were taking part in exercises in the North Sea near Harwich when they collided while on the surface. Both ships sank. There were no survivors from E4 but fifteen of the crew of E41 were picked up by HMS Firedrake who was on the scene within two minutes. Among those who lost their lives was John Gibson from HM Submarine E4. |
